Who can forget those childhood days of playing with sidewalk chalk?

From roads and towns, to outlining your friends, to hearts and rainbows, the possibilities of chalk drawings seemed endless. And despite the possibility that these drawings would be washed away at the next rain, you were never daunted from going all out with your artwork.

For some, the joy of chalk art never ended. Plenty of artists use chalk to express themselves, taking the chance to work outside rather than in a studio. Chalk is an inexpensive medium, naturally blends, and gives artists a chance to share their work in a variety of locations. A rising trend among these artists is to replicate their childhood favorites with their own creative spin. Using chalk, Disney characters, movie moments, and icons come to life in a completely new way.

BONUS: You might also enjoy Star Wars chalk art designs.

Sidewalk chalk is also a great way to get outside to bond with your kids, or have a great time reliving your childhood. Put down your phone, enjoy some fresh air, put aside your cares, and just play! Draw out your favorite scenes with yourself in the middle of the action, or let loose and show your creative side.

Whether you are looking for inspiration for the next time you and your children play with chalk, or as an aspiring artist, these drawings will bring a small to your face and have you breaking out the sidewalk chalk.

A beloved character, Sadness from Inside Out reminds us that it’s ok to feel all our emotions and be sad sometimes. The bright colors of the other memory orbs complement the blue of Sadness, who has been perfectly replicated. This is a smaller drawing, which is a great way to start if you are just getting into sidewalk art.

Evangeline

A Bug's Life Chalk Art

This sweet scene shows Ray admiring his belle Evangeline, his one true firefly love, from A Bug’s Life. A simple drawing, this piece shows how anyone can use chalk to create their own personal masterpiece. All of these colors are in a standard box of sidewalk chalk and is easy for kids to copy.

Piglet

Piglet Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @chalkoftheneighborhood

A great way to master chalk is to start with a basic character with minimal coloring. Winnie the Pooh‘s buddy Piglet only has two basic colors, so it is easy to start with the pinks and then add the black details on top. Simple lines make Piglet’s sweet and innocent expression come to life.

Do You Want to Build a Snowman?

Frozen Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @mousesteps

Much more complex, this chalk art piece takes the Frozen characters and makes a unique scene. A trend in Disney art, the characters work together to make a new piece of the artist’s creation. Here, Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf, work together to build their own snowman. Beautiful blending and loving expressions bring life to the characters and joy to our hearts.

A Whole New World

Aladdin & Jasmine Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @millermouseketeers

Capturing a romantic moment with Aladdin and Jasmine, this chalk drawing is bright and colorful. The artwork conveys the emotion of the scene with a beautiful color as the background. Easy to repeat at home, you don’t have to be a professional artist to make your own Disney scene.

I am not a Codfish!!

Peter Pan Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @brenna.williams

Putting yourself in the middle of the scene is one of the most popular trends in chalk art. The ticking crocodile from Peter Pan is featured in this drawing, with the boy pretending to scream as he “falls” into the croc’s mouth.  A fun caricature of the crocodile, going just for the colors rather than adding a black outline makes the art brighter.

You are Incredible!

Dash the Incredibles Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @louieacorrea

This fun sidewalk chalk design includes Dash Parr, part of The Incredibles family. Using Dash as a part of a unique design is a cool way to do your own artwork piece. This particular design would be a great option if you are doing an Incredibles themed party for your kids. The positive message as well as the bright colors make it a great look regardless.

Toulouse and Marie

The Aristocats Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @chalkoftheneighborhood

Two cute kitties from The Aristocats are great options for your Disney sidewalk chalk art. To make these designs, you should do the colors as a base first and then do the black outlines on top. A great way to mimic the cats is to use basic shapes first and then add in the details with the black outline.

Maleficent

Maleficent Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @chalkoftheneighborhood

Looking great in green, this awesome at-home version of Maleficent comes alive in chalk. Coloring hard with the chalk gives a more opaque look to the artwork, which also fits with the flat nature of the animation. Her expression tells you she’s up to no good, fitting with the character’s theme.

Winnie the Pooh

Winnie the Pooh
Source: Instagram @chalkoftheneighborhood

Everyone’s favorite teddy bear is adorable in chalk. This artist makes the lovable bear come to life with this pose, and shows excellent artistic choices. For instance, several of the outlines are done in a brown rather than a black. This lets Pooh’s natural coloring come through, but still adds distinction to the parts of the drawing.

Just Keep Swimming

Finding Nemo Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @kolbyrawlings

Dory taught us that when things get tough, sometimes we just need to get on swimming, or keep on going. A great life lesson for your kids, and the perfect caption for this Finding Nemo chalk drawing. This design incorporates some of the cool stylized writing that is currently on trend.

Also Cute and Fluffy!

Stitch Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @chalkoftheneighborhood

While he is sometimes chaotic, Stitch worked his way into our hearts in Lilo and Stitch with his adorable antics. He makes a fabulous chalk drawing with the bright blue color, particularly awesome with deep nature of the blues. This action pose makes it seem like Stitch is coming right for you, which he will if you don’t watch out!

Dragon Fight

Sleeping Beauty Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @chalkoftheneighborhood

The climactic moment of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent transforms into a dragon to try to stop Prince Philip from rescuing Aurora. Gorgeous chalk colors blend together to make the scene shine, including the bright green of the fire. The color choices here fit with the film, but also add a bright punch ideal for sidewalk chalk.

Spirit of Aloha

Lilo & Stitch Chalk Art

Another super cute Stitch drawing, this piece brings together high-quality art with simpler chalk designs. This would be a great way to get your kids involved if you are a chalk artist, or just let out your inner child. Having Stitch also draw with the chalk makes him seem more real, as though he’s actually there on the sidewalk with you.

Sully

Sully from Monsters Inc Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @millermouseketeers

This depiction of Sully is simple but cute in a classic sidewalk chalk style. Using the teal color for the base gives you the chance to blend the other colors in on top, without the need for harsh outlining. This is also a great lesson in blending if you are doing a mini-art lesson with your kiddos.

Alice in Wonderland Tiles

Alice in Wonderland detailed Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @disney.sister.stories

A cool take on a chalk drawing, this would be a fun option for an art class or summer camp. Draw out Alice (or any character) and the individual squares first, and then let the kids fill in the squares however they’d like. It all comes together in a great collaborative piece, and the kids all had the chance to contribute. In the case of this particular piece, guests were able to contribute as part of the Epcot International Festival of the Arts.

Fire Spirit

Frozen 2 Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @mundane2magical

Who didn’t love the adorable elemental spirit from Frozen II? This is a great sketch to do with your kids, as the animal is simple and easy. Doing the colored background first on the tile adds a little something to the drawing. Not to mention, assigning particular pieces of the sidewalk based on the cracks helps to keep the peace where kids are concerned!

Classic Minnie Mouse

Minnie Mouse Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @iheartdisneymagic

For fans of Minnie Mouse, this is a great option for beginning chalk artists. Sticking with the basics, like her outline, facial features, and bow, makes the design easier to accomplish. Also breaking Minnie down into simple shapes will help. As long as you stick with her classic colors of red and black, she will be instantly recognizable!

Shaggy Sully

Sully Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @chalkoftheneighborhood

By its nature, chalk is the perfect medium for putting layers in your artwork. In this drawing of Sully, his fur becomes more textured and lifelike by putting the different colors on top of one another. His friendly facial expression helps along with his huggable appearance help you to know for sure he’s a nice monster.

Classic Goofy

Goofy Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @lane.chalkart

Mimicking the opening to the classic Goofy cartoons, this headshot of Goofy’s is happy and friendly. Every detail is perfect, from the bright green of his hat to wrinkles of his face. Using darker version of the colors to provide the outlines helps the drawing to come alive.

Keep It Cool

Olaf from Frozen Chalk Art

Olaf has the right idea for the warm summer months! Basking in his favorite season, this gorgeous depiction of Olaf brings the scene to life. Using different colors to shade, Olaf appears three dimensional in the piece. Adding the ripples in the water finishes the effect.

Castle and Fireworks

Disney Castle Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @lane.chalkart

Fun, bright, and colorful, this is a great Disney chalk design for kids. Not only is the artwork simple, but this is an awesome way to teach some basic art skills about combining colors to bring dimension to your art. The hidden Mickey at the top of the design is just the perfect final touch.

Eeyore

Eeyore Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @chalkoftheneighborhood

Lovably gloomy, Eeyore is another great starter character for a chalk design. Well known by kids of all ages, Eeyore also uses just a few colors and basic shapes to start with. Adding the black details is easy once you have the basic design elements. Add a smile to his face to liven up his typically melancholy nature, and don’t forget the tail!

Wrath of Hades

Hades Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @charmony11

Villains have been rising in popularity among Disney fans, and one of the hottest villains is Hades, the god of death. Known for his characteristic blue flame hair, when Hades really gets steamed fire shoots off him at all angles. This awesome chalk scene shows Hades in battle, hands aflame and ready to fight!

Remy and Cheese

Remy from Ratatouille Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @floridianstravelguide

An artwork in progress, the beloved rat Remy is seen here gathering cheese for his next delicious dish. This picture is a great example of laying the bottom colors first, and the going back with darker shading and outlines. You can also see that the artist drew out the outline of Ratatouille’s Remy first, and then went back in with the color. Already fantastic, this piece will be even better when it is completed!

The Pumpkin King

Jack Skellington Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @pinchofjinger

Who needs to carve a jack o’ lantern when you have sidewalk chalk? A fabulously spooky addition to your Halloween decoration, this carved pumpkin features the silhouette of Jack Skellington at the center. He is seen standing on the curved hill from Halloweentown, with smaller pumpkins in the foreground. While this design takes a bit of effort, the result is definitely worth it!

Mushu

Mulan Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @breeakorea

Some of the best artwork shows characters in action, and this depiction of Mushu from Mulan is no different. Illustrating the moment when the Huns burst out of the snow, Mushu is horrified at the thought of having to face men who lived through an avalanche. He seems even more lifelike with the non-outline approach.

Adventure Awaits

Up Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @mundane2magical

Carl Frederickson’s house in Up! (and accompanying balloons) is the perfect chalk design for all ages. As the most difficult part is the house, older kids can be tasked with that component while younger ones can focus on making the balloons. The result is a beautiful family drawing that allowed everyone the chance to help. Putting Adventure Awaits with the artwork is another nice nod to the movie.

Sisters for Life

Frozen Elsa & Anna Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @coastersandcastlestravel

A great representation of Anna and Elsa, this artwork takes advantage of some of the best aspects of chalk as a medium. Multiple layers of color give the design a painted quality, while the chalk naturally lends itself to blending colors for depth and dimension. The colors show brightly against the pavement, and the sweetness of the sisters’ expressions is undeniable.

Baby Mine

Dumbo Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @goodartsyvibes

Truly iconic, the sweet moment between Dumbo and his mother before their separation is somehow more beautiful in this chalk drawing. Different accent colors make the shading stand out and bring another layer of emotion to the piece. The round nature of the artist’s style fits the mood well, making Dumbo seem even more innocent and in need of his mother.

Simba Pub Sign

Simba from The Lion King Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @esc_cc

Who says Disney isn’t for adults? A great choice for restaurant chalk art, Simba from The Lion King speaks to all of us on a Friday afternoon when we’re just getting off work. It’s undeniable, what he expresses is a mood. So what are you waiting for? After all, this is the true spirit of hakuna matata.

Sorcerer Mickey

Sorcerer Mickey Mouse Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @thedizzyarmadillo

A larger chalk piece, the Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey Mouse comes alive in this drawing (although thankfully not as alive as the broomsticks!). This artist has gone for a white outline rather than the typical black, which stands out in an interesting way against the colors. The iconic hat of Yensid is striking with the blend of blues and swirl of the brim. Adding the touch of magic in the form of the golden arch gives a perfect finishing touch.

Darling Dumbo

cute Dumbo Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @stephaniefever

Dumbo is truly precious in this piece, from the style of the artist to the choice to go without outlines. His rounded cheeks look perfectly pinchable, even in chalk, and you can almost feel the flap of his ears. This chalk drawing is a great example of more fluid interpretation of the character while still hitting the elements we know and love.

Merry Christmas Olaf!

Olaf Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @goodartsyvibes

As a snowman, Olaf fits perfectly with the holiday season and decorating for Christmas. With his Santa hat, it’s clear that he’s getting ready to spread some Christmas cheer. If you like to go all out with decorating, consider adding chalk drawings to your holiday look. You’d better take a picture though, before they melt away!

M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E

Mickey Mouse Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @stephaniefever

Who’s the leader of the club that’s made for you and me? Why, Mickey Mouse of course! A vintage Mickey look, this is a great, simple art piece for chalk beginners. Black and white are perfect here, fitting with the old school style, and the white outline provides just the right finish.

How do You Spell Love?

Winnie the Pooh & Piglet Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @megansartwork

One of the sweetest best friend pairs ever imagined, Winnie the Pooh and Piglet are utterly adorable in this sidewalk chalk drawing. They don’t even seem to be chalk, the blending of the colors make the image look more like a painting. Part of this effect comes from using darker colors on the edges rather than an outline, as well as incorporating different shading techniques. A chalk masterpiece that will melt your heart (and make you want some honey).

You Don’t Spell Love, You Feel It

Piglet & Winnie the Pooh Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @megansartwork

The beginning of the previous drawing, this shows how to accomplish many of these chalk creations. The artist outlines the initial design (here, Pooh and Piglet), typically in plain white chalk. That makes it easier for the artist to see where the lines are, and to blend the white in later. From there, all that needs to happen is adding the color. Especially for designs with layers of color, texture, and shading, this is a great trick.

Phineas and Ferb

Phineas & Ferb Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @chalk_n_awe

Our favorite summer-loving brothers from Phineas & Ferb are off on another crazy summer adventure! This time, surfing is the order of the day, complete with their buddy Perry the Platypus (aka Agent P). The sun and fun are evident, between the facial expressions and bright colors. The waves make you want to dive right in!

Jack Skellington

Nightmare before Christmas Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @edutaining_adventures

Everyone’s favorite skeleton is the perfect sidewalk decoration for spooky season (or Christmas, technically). Complete with his characteristic grin, Jack looks great in this design. The style of the art here reflects the book illustrations, a nice nod to the story. Adding the pumpkin above him fits with the theme and put the last touches on the decoration.

Disney Magic

Disney Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @mickeyboard_official

When you think of Walt Disney World, these are probably some of the images that come to mind. No trip would be complete without fireworks, as the WDW shows are one of a kind. The castle is of course an iconic image, along with the sorcerer hat. Bright colors add a whimsical touch to the piece. This is the kind of artwork you get when you just let your imagination run free!

Donald Duck

Donald Duck Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @roxiodelao

While textured walkways prove a more challenging workspace, chalk is not limited to the smooth ground. Sometimes, using a different shape, such as bricks, adds something to the look. Donald Duck brightens these dark stones, both in color and in his facial expression. You just have to be careful with your proportions when working with blocks, which this artist has done.

The Incredibles Logo

The Incredibles Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @roxiodelao

Almost like a call signal, the symbol from the Parr family’s super suits is a fun and simple chalk design. The bright colors stand out against the dark walkway, while the laid brick gives a cool textural element. Turning the chalk sideways allows for the effect in the rings, while directly coloring on the sidewalk makes the I stand out.

I Like Warm Hugs

Olaf Snowman Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @crazymomwithchalk

A fun way to take family photos, you can draw out the favorite character of your little prince or princess (or pirate or fairy…you get the idea), then snap a picture! Here, an adorable Anna is perfect next to the friendly snowman, Olaf. Have your child lay down next to the character or strike an action pose, however you want to frame the photo. You will end up a picture to cherish

Let’s Make a Deal

Finding Dory Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @megansartwork

Hank, the cranky septopus from Finding Dory, and Dory make a cute pair in this chalk drawing. The moment seen here is when Hank is trying to get Dory to give him her tag to transfer him away to a new home, which Dory agrees to in exchange for finding her family. The expressions perfectly capture the nature of each character, as do the bright colors. It is almost as if the artist paused the movie and placed it on the pavement.

Circle of Life

Simba Lion King Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @crazymomwithchalk

Even non-Disney fans recognize the iconic image of Rafiki presenting the new prince, Simba, to the Pride Lands. Infant Simba hangs in the air, unaware of the significance of the moment, while Rafiki proudly displays the future king. The colors remain true to the film, capturing the scene perfectly.

Ohana Means Family

Ohana Stitch Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @crazymomwithchalk

The beautiful message of ohana in Lilo and Stitch is one that warms our hearts. Stitch finds his ohana with Lilo and Nani, and while he was originally their pet he becomes so much more. However, it is a cute nod to the way Stitch met Lilo to have him sitting in a dog’s pose, as she found him at an animal shelter as her “dog.” His bright blue coloring and wide grin show the lovable side of Stitch, even if his behavior isn’t always lovable.

The Wonderful World of Disney

Mickey & Minnie Mouse Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @crazymomwithchalk

The Cinderella’s castle, Mickey, and Minnie are great additions to this family photo. As Tinker Bell is often seen within these scenes in the commercials or television specials, it’s a fun way to work the little fairy into the picture. Tinker Bell also flies from the castle every night to start the fireworks, so her placement is perfect.

Belle and her Beast

Beauty & the Beast Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @crazymomwithchalk

For Beauty and the Beast fans, this is a great picture option. Especially if you have a little princess, depicting the Beast and his rose is perfect for the pose. Highly detailed and dashing in his ballroom garb, this Beast is ideal for a photo opp.

Lady and the Tramp

Lady & the Tramp Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @bailey.m.roberts

Probably the best known moment in the original Lady & the Tramp film, the romantic Bella Note spaghetti dinner is adorable in this chalk drawing. Sweet and innocent, the expressions on both dogs are perfect. Captured in time, the frozen moment is straight out of the film.

Animal Sidekicks

Moana Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @smgalligan123

Moana’s faithful animals, Pua and Heihei, are adorable in this depiction. Using their own style, the artist created sweet versions of the animals. Both of their expressions are impeccable, showing the personality of each. Particularly with Heihei, the colors are beautiful.

Be Our Guest

Be Our Guest Chalk Art
Source: Instagram @megansartwork

Lumiere, suave and debonair as ever, has a painted quality in this chalk drawing. Blending the colors smooths out his likeness and sets the scene. So relax, pull up a chair, and enjoy the artwork!

Great artwork can be found almost anywhere you look. While most people don’t think of chalk when they imagine great artwork, but chalk gives so many more options than some other art media. Bright colors blend together perfectly, almost better than paint. Drawing inspiration from some of the greatest animated films of all time only makes sense when looking for something to draw. Next time you’re feeling creative, break out the sidewalk chalk and get drawing!
