Dobby Loves the Sock
Dobby was a house-elf who worked for the Malfoys. Dark Wizards were his masters, and they were harsh to him. He defied his master in 1992 by attempting to tell Harry Potter about the conspiracy to reopen the Chamber of Secrets. He learned of this through his masters’ relationship with Lord Voldemort.
After defeating Tom Riddle’s memory and slaying the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets, Harry duped Lucius Malfoy into releasing Dobby at the conclusion of the school year. T. M. Riddle’s Diary was placed inside Harry’s sock to do this. Lucius yanked the sock from the book and tossed it into the air, where it was grabbed by Dobby.
Dobby went through a time of unemployment during which he was shunned for not having “appropriate shame” over being jobless. Although he enjoyed working as a hobby, he was typically happy to be free. Dobby was glad to be free of the Malfoys’ abuse, but he was also thrilled to be joining the Hogwarts staff. He could visit and go as he pleased at Hogwarts, he didn’t have many duties, and the ones he did have were rather straightforward. Dobby demanded some remuneration for his efforts, and he and Dumbledore ultimately reached to a deal.
Dobby went on to work in the Hogwarts kitchens, earning one Galleon per week and receiving one day off each month.
Dobby, along with Kreacher, assisted Harry in snooping on Draco Malfoy in 1997. In 1998, he traveled to Malfoy Manor on Aberforth Dumbledore’s orders to defend Harry and his comrades from Death Eaters. He was fatally injured by Bellatrix Lestrange’s dagger during the rescue, but he managed to apparate Harry and Griphook to safety at Shell Cottage.
Harry excavated Dobby’s tomb in the gardens of Shell Cottage without using any wizardry, and engraved his name into the gravestone: “HERE LIES DOBBY, A FREE ELF.”
