Lucerne Weather Overview

The biggest bummer about planning a vacation in advance is that you have no control over what the weather will be like on your trip. However, knowledge is power and by learning about the different weather patterns you can decide what time of year you want to visit and what you should bring when you go.

Rain

One of the biggest factors that contributes to Lucerne’s amazing alpine beauty is the frequent showers that fall on the region. With an average of 132 days of precipitation per year, it is very possible that your visit to Lucerne will include a little wetness.

Rain in Lucerne is more often than not a light drizzle that lasts for much of the day. A raincoat and umbrella are perfect to combat this type of weather if you still want to explore the old city despite the weather. If the forecast shows that a thunderstorm is approaching, a downpour might be something to expect as well. In this case, find somewhere indoors or covered and maybe eat some Swiss chocolate while you wait out the rain.

Humidity

While the temperatures in Lucerne rarely ever exceed 80°F (27°C) in Lucerne, humidity can make summer days feel warmer than it actually is. The average humidity ranges from a low of 70% to a high of 84% throughout the course of the year.

Humidity affects the winter months as well. The wet air can make the frost have an extra bite, seemingly soaking through your heavy coat. Bring layers to keep warm during cold winters.

Snow

Snow isn’t a very common occurrence in Lucerne because it isn’t high enough in elevation to rival the surrounding alps. The most snowfall happens in February, and it often isn’t enough to be worried about.

The surrounding mountains, Mount Pilatus and Mount Titlis, are sure to be snow capped during the winter and they offer opportunities for winter sports if you are looking forward to a snowy day trip from Lucerne.
