Mulan is a 1998 American animated musical film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation. It is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, a legendary female warrior who disguises herself as a man to take her father’s place in the army.
Mulan – Art Nouveau
The character of Mulan was voiced by American actress and singer, Ming-Na Wen. The filmmakers were impressed by her performance in The Joy Luck Club and thought she would be perfect for the role.
Eddie Murphy provided the voice for Mushu, the film’s comedic dragon sidekick. The character was originally intended to be a traditional Chinese dragon, but the filmmakers felt it was too difficult to animate, so they made him smaller and more playful.
Time flies – Mulan
Mulan was the first Disney Princess who was not of European descent. Her story and background were based on Chinese culture and history, which made the film a significant milestone for diversity and representation in mainstream media.
The film’s music was composed by Jerry Goldsmith, with songs written by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel. The soundtrack includes the popular songs “Reflection” and “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.”
The filmmakers consulted with Chinese cultural experts and scholars to ensure the film was accurate and respectful to Chinese culture. The result was a film that was praised for its cultural authenticity and sensitivity.
Disney’s Signature Collection
Mulan was released during a time when Disney was struggling financially, and its success helped revitalize the company’s animation department. The film grossed over $300 million worldwide and received critical acclaim.
Mulan with red dragon
Mulan was also the first Disney animated film to feature computer-generated imagery (CGI) for certain scenes, such as the avalanche scene in the mountains.

Ming-Na Wen later played the character of Agent Melinda May in the Marvel TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. She made a cameo appearance in the 2020 live-action Mulan film as well.
Faceless Beauty: Mulan
Mulan was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, who both won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film for the film.
Mulan by Water colour
The film’s release was delayed in China due to controversy over the film’s portrayal of Chinese culture. The Chinese government criticized the film for its depiction of a strong female warrior and for not being historically accurate.
Flower that blooms in adversity
The character of Mulan is one of the few Disney Princesses who does not have a love interest or a romantic storyline in her film.
But… I’m a real dragon!
The film’s theme of gender equality and breaking gender stereotypes resonated with audiences and critics alike. Mulan was praised for her bravery, intelligence, and independence, qualities that were not typically associated with female characters in animated films.
Mulan was originally intended to be a straight-to-video release, but the filmmakers were so impressed with the quality of the animation that they decided to release it in theaters instead.
The film was dubbed into several different languages, including Mandarin, Cantonese, and Japanese, to appeal to a wider international audience.
Mulan’s horse, Khan, was named after Genghis Khan, the founder of the Mongol Empire.
Mulan’s real name in Chinese folklore is Hua Mulan, which translates to “Magnolia Flower.” Her name was changed to Fa Mulan in the Disney film.
Reflect before you snack—act!
The film was adapted into a successful stage musical that premiered in 1999. The musical features additional songs and new characters, including a new love interest for Mulan.
Origami – Mulan
The live-action Mulan film released in 2020 is a retelling of the original Chinese legend and not a direct remake of the animated film. It features a more realistic and serious tone, with fewer musical numbers and no Mushu character.
Disney Ballerina: Mulan
The live-action film was directed by Niki Caro and starred Liu Yifei as Mulan. It also featured a predominantly Chinese cast, with actors such as Donnie Yen, Gong Li, and Jet Li.
The live-action film faced controversy for its filming location in Xinjiang, a region in China known for its human rights abuses against the Uyghur population. The film’s lead actress, Liu Yifei, also faced backlash for expressing support for the Hong Kong police during the 2019 protests.
Cuttin My Hairs
The character of Mulan has been a source of inspiration for many young girls and women, who look up to her as a symbol of strength and bravery. She has become a popular cosplay and Halloween costume choice, and merchandise featuring the character is still popular today.
Why is Mulan any different?
Mulan has also been featured in several Disney theme park attractions, including the “Mulan Parade” at Disneyland and the “Mulan Live!” show at Hong Kong Disneyland.
You don’t meet a girl like that
The success of Mulan inspired other Disney films that celebrated diversity and representation, such as Pocahontas and The Princess and the Frog. Mulan remains a beloved and iconic character in Disney’s pantheon of animated heroes and heroines.
